Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) and RSE Programme

Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Education is a planned programme of lessons and experiences that help our young people to grow and develop as individuals and become responsible citizens. PSHCE deals equips students with knowledge, understanding and skills to live a healthy, safe, fulfilled and responsible life. It also enables students to think about the values and attitudes they have including British Values so they can grow into confident members of society. PSHE and Citizenship is embedded into the whole school curriculum across subjects and year groups

The PSHCE programme is delivered in Years 7-13 by tutors on Monday Period 1. The programme is co-ordinated by the Heads of Year and the Assistant Headteacher Ms. L Specchia.

Programme delivery:

All Form Tutors deliver the programme to their form class. During these lessons, teachers create an environment where they feel safe to explore and reflect. All staff are committed to supporting and enhancing the personal development of our students.

At Mulberry Stepney Green College, we celebrate differences. Students learn about differences, challenge stereotypes and empathise with others through our Celebrating Diversity Programme which takes place throughout the year.

Aims

The aims of PSHE are to enable the students to:

· Know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle

· Be aware of safety issues

· Understand what makes for good relationships with others

· Have respect for others regardless of race, gender and mental and physical disability

· Be independent and responsible members of the school community

· Be positive and active members of a democratic society

· Develop self-confidence and self-esteem and to make informed choices regarding personal and social issues

· Develop good relationships with other members of the school and wider community

SRE

The aim of RSE is to give young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds. We have worked together with our parents to put together a suitable, meaningful and relevant RSE programme which is embedded into the PSHCE programme. Our programme meets the statutory requirements outlined by the DFE.

The PSHCE programme aims to ensure that all pupils:

· acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of how the United Kingdom is governed, its political system and how citizens participate actively in its democratic systems of government

· develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the role of law and the justice system in our society and how laws are shaped and enforced

· are equipped with the skills to think critically and debate political questions, to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis, and plan for future financial needs. Citizenship Education plays an important role in creating social cohesion and enabling an understanding of diverse communities. At Mulberry Stepney Green College, we want to value diversity and instil in our students that differences are to be appreciated and valued.

The Golden Thread across our PSHCE programme includes Three Core Themes:

Overview of PSHCE KS3-KS4 programme

The KS3 programme of study enables students to develop spiritually, morally and holistically as an individual. Some of the units explored include; what positive relationships are and how to look after our physical and mental well-being. The concept of respect runs through the programme and students celebrate differences in one another.

The KS4 programme of study enables students to explore the topic of staying healthy at a deeper level for example look at risk-taking behaviour, its consequences and the law. Students are taught how manage pressures from the media and how to manage stress as they prepare for sitting their GCSE exams.

Overview of PSHCE KS5 programme

The Key Stage 5 programme of study allows students to explore the factors that are most relevant to their futures and prepares them for further education, the world of work and adult social lives. They study exam and revision skills to prepare them for A level and BTEC exams, as well as exploring careers and applying to university. They begin to delve into more complex issues such as adult relationships and how to have a safe and healthy lifestyle when becoming more independent from school and parents. They also learn valuable life skills such as managing money, understanding taxes and borrowing. They also look at tolerance and diversity with the aim to have concientious and well-rounded students who are prepared to be successful in society and their professional life after leaving us.

How can parents support their child?

• Discuss topical issues and current events to develop understanding and encourage critical response i.e. Anti-racism, Black History Month, Equality and Discrimination, Terrorism, Disability, Climate Change, Safety Online and Identity.

• Encouraging reading as widely as possible from magazines and newspapers, online newspapers (e.g. The Day/Newsround)

• Maintain positive communication

• Encourage students to fundraise for charities

• Model responsible citizenship

• Keeping a record of all achievements – academic and personal

Review

Our PSHCE and SRE programme is reviewed annually by the Co-ordinator and SLT. Students, teachers and parental reviews feed into the changes we embed.
