Year 10 students shine in Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge

This term, 50 students from Year 10 were selected to participate in a Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge workshop at Mulberry Stepney Green School.

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge is an opportunity for Year 10 students to develop important communication skills in a fun and positive environment where their views are respected. Every year more than 200,000 young people take part. Our students joined a full-day workshop delivered by an expert trainer. They were taught how to speak with confidence, express their thoughts and opinions in a respectful manner, and communicate clearly while listening to their peers.

Sixth Form geographers host brunch for Year 11s

Sixth Form Geography students (with a little help from their teachers) held a Geography Brunch this term.

It was held at lunch time, and Year 11 students were invited to find out more about studying Geography at A Level, ask questions and have some hot chocolate and snacks. The Year 11s had the opportunity to look through the current students’ folders of work, sample exam papers, textbooks and to discuss career pathways with Geography.

Thank you to all Year 11s who came along and to the Sixth Form students for being wonderful hosts.

Year 8 embraces safety first

This half term, Year 8 students were fortunate to attend a Drop Down Day, which links to the PSHCE curriculum. The day consisted of students attending a range of workshops called Safety First, which is a blue light collaboration project delivered by the London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service.

The Safety First team delivered vital prevention education messages to our Year 8 students.

The London Fire Brigade delivered sessions focused on arson, fire prevention and fire safety. Students learnt how to keep themselves and others safe.
The London Ambulance Service introduced the concept Choose Well and the importance of getting the right care at the right time. There were discussions on the growing problem of knife crime and the principles of haemorrhage control. Our young people were also given the opportunity to reflect on who else might be affected by knife crime, such as the victims’ families.

The Metropolitan Police Service presentations and discussions focused on the dangers of child exploitation and gave students the opportunity to spot the signs of this. The presentation also featured serious youth violence, with activities related to gangs and knife crime, and the repercussions and dangers of the choices students may make. Students were also informed about the positive actions they can take.

Students found the Drop Down Day thoroughly engaging and we cannot wait to welcome our public services back again next year.

Connect: Issue #14 out now!

We are so excited to share the spring edition of Connect, the Mulberry Schools Trust newsletter, which is out now!

It features the amazing work taking place at Mulberry Wood Wharf Primary, as well as the incredible opportunities that have been presented to our schools. We’ve been privileged to receive invitations to two remarkable occasions with The Royal Family, showcasing the hard work and dedication of both our students and staff. Furthermore, we are proud to reveal the formal launch of the Mulberry Production Arts Academy as part of our Mulberry Changemakers programme (see page 4).

There have been many remarkable events in the past few months, such as the Mulberry Schools Trust Annual Education Lecture at the RSA and the launch of the Reconnect London report. Our students have had the chance to come together and learn through various activities, such as our Societies and the Trust’s GCSE Maths Revision Conference, creating a sense of community and collaboration.

We hope you enjoy reading about our schools and the opportunities they provide our students.

Enjoy!

Mulberry STEM Academy Graduation!

Our Year 11 and 13 Mulberry STEM Academy class of 2023 had an amazing afternoon full of celebration and splendour at the Mulberry STEM Academy Graduation ceremony on Friday 3rd March. The ceremony took place at Mulberry UTC and was kindly organised by the Mulberry Schools Trust.

Our students were presented with their graduation certificates and goody bags by the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 (MGP) team. Alongside the graduation award, our students won awards from many other categories. We’re extremely proud of Hibaaq and Ishraq for being only 2 out of more than 50 STEM graduates to receive the Mulberry STEM Academy. This award was given to a total of 5 STEM graduates for completing the STEM programme whilst demonstrating and leading with values such as passion, respect, innovation, determination and excellence. We’re also equally proud of Anas, Shah and Nabeel for receiving the Mulberry STEM Academy Excellence Awards. The excellence awards were awarded to a total of 10 students from across the Mulberry Trust for completing the STEM project to the highest standard and best of their abilities.

Our Year 13 STEM team (aptly named Team Storm after their internationally winning F24+ car), were awarded the Best Team Award – huge congratulations to the whole team!  And of course, not forgetting our Year 11 STEM team (their car was named Starlight) who also graduated and received goody bags from MGP at the event – well done to all!

There were many familiar and important faces in attendance, including the CEO of Mulberry Schools Trust, Dr. Vanessa Ogden as well as SLT members from across the Mulberry Schools Trust. We would like to thank Ms El-Messoudi; Ms Gill (Head of Year 13); Mr Bisran (Green Power Lead); Mr Jessop (Deputy Headteacher); Mr Z. Chowdhury (Deputy Headteacher); and Mr Bhutta (Headteacher) for joining in the celebrations with our proud students. A special thank you goes to Dr. Mundy and Ms Montgomerie for organising such a beautiful and remarkable ceremony for all the STEM graduates. The most unforgettable and amazing part of the afternoon for our STEM Academy cohort was the attendance by the MGP accompanied by the Mercedes W14 F1 car, which took centre stage where our students received their graduation awards by MGP CPO Mr. Paul Mills. Our students were also treated to a personal congratulatory video message by none other than 7-time F1 Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, and MGP CEO Toto Wolff!

Whilst we congratulate and bid farewell to our STEM Academy class of 2023, we must now look forward to the new year and getting excited to see what the new season has in store for us. Our Year 10 and Year 12 Mulberry STEM Academy team has been selected, and the Greenpower project of 2024 has officially commenced!

As 2023’s cohort hands over the torch, our new Greenpower 2024 team are excited for the upcoming challenges and races. Watch this space for the many upcoming activities and adventures this year’s STEM team will take part in.

We wish our STEM 2023 scholars all the very best of luck for the future and hope that they will stay in touch with us as part of the Mulberry STEM Academy Alumni.
