Students explore urban art

This term, students have been working on their new ‘Urban Environments’ project, exploring new artists and materials to build their skills. They started by looking at works by contemporary Korean artist Sunga Park, exploring different buildings and refining work with a fine liner pen. 

The second artist they explored, Tom Quigley, uses Manchester as the backdrop to his paintings. The students used acrylic paint, rather than oils, to explore techniques for layering, building texture and mixing colour. 

Awards ceremony inspires girls

Mulberry Stepney Green’s girls had an inspiring time at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards on Thursday 27th June.

Celebrating success in law, medicine, sport and business, students also had the privilege of meeting Cherie Blair, who personally welcomed them and offered encouragement. The students left feeling inspired by the achievements of the women they met.

 

Year 10 bowled over by rewards

This term, Mulberry Stepney Green celebrated its role model students, rewarding their achievements, perfect 100 per cent attendance and positive behaviour, with a trip to Hollywood Bowl.

These students consistently contribute to the school community and we’re hugely grateful to the Jack Petchey Foundation for funding a fun day of bowling, lunch and arcade games that gave us the opportunity to show our appreciation for these exceptional individuals. 

The fact that venue staff commented on how well-behaved and polite they were just added to our reasons to be proud of them, and sealed the success of the day.

First Year 7 Culture Day a celebratory success

Following a request from the School Council, our Year 7 students recently enjoyed exploring the diversity of the school community during Mulberry Stepney Green’s first ever Culture Day. 

Celebrations – held on Friday 21st June – began with an assembly organised by Cultural Ambassadors from Years 8 and 9, and their teachers. Students learnt about what makes some of our staff and students proud of their heritage, and about some key demographics of our borough community. Students researched some of the cultures that contribute to the rich tapestry of our school as part of a House Competition, and took part in an inter-house cricket competition. Creative culture lessons through the day ranged from a food tech session and making Chinese lanterns in art, to a football-themed music lesson and a Polish games class. 

There was a tangible excitement throughout the day as students embraced the cultural exchange – just as keen to be learning about others’ cultures and the diverse backgrounds of classmates and teachers as they were celebrating their own heritage by proudly wearing cultural dress or the colours of their flags.

Year 10 prepare for world of work

Year 10 students participated in mock assessment centre workshops to prepare for the world of work – these featured a variety of exercises, role-playing scenarios and simulated interviews to build confidence and capability in articulating ideas, interview techniques and teamwork.

We are really proud of the professionalism displayed by our Year 10 students, which bodes well for their onward progression into further education and the world of work.
